GroupMe is a popular mobile messaging application launched in 2010. It was originally developed in the United States by Steve Martocci and Jared Hecht at a TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon. The platform quickly gained traction as a simple way for groups to communicate via SMS or mobile data without requiring a full social media profile.

The brand's journey through corporate ownership is notable. Shortly after its inception, it was acquired by Skype Technologies in 2011 for approximately $85 million. Just months later, Microsoft Corporation acquired Skype, bringing GroupMe into its massive portfolio of communication tools. Today, GroupMe continues to operate as a part of Microsoft's suite of services, maintaining its headquarters and primary development within the United States.
