The LaCie Rugged is an iconic external storage device known for its signature orange rubber sleeve, designed by renowned industrial designer Neil Poulton. Since its debut, the Rugged line has become a standard for creative professionals who require durable, shock-resistant data storage in the field. The design emphasizes physical protection against drops, rain, and pressure, making it one of the most recognizable pieces of computer hardware in the world.
Founded in France, LaCie established itself as a premium manufacturer of computer peripherals before becoming a subsidiary. Today, while the engineering and design heritage remain rooted in its European origins, the high-volume assembly of these drives primarily takes place in China. Ownership has also shifted across borders over the decades. In 2012, the American storage giant Seagate Technology announced the acquisition of LaCie to strengthen its position in the premium and consumer storage markets. Consequently, the brand is now managed as a high-end division under Seagate's global umbrella, headquartered in Ireland and the United States.
