Suunto was founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, a Finnish orienteer and inventor who revolutionized compass manufacturing with the liquid-filled field compass. For decades, the brand became synonymous with high-precision instruments for diving, mountaineering, and training. While the company grew as a Finnish staple, it transitioned through several corporate owners, most notably Amer Sports.
In 2022, Suunto was acquired by Liesheng, a Chinese consumer electronics company specializing in smart wearable hardware. Despite this change in ultimate ownership, Suunto maintains its headquarters and a significant manufacturing facility in Vantaa, Finland, where its premium watches (such as the Race, Vertical, and 9 series) continue to be hand-crafted. Lower-tier components and specific product lines are sourced and assembled in China to leverage local manufacturing efficiencies.
