Collins remains one of the most prominent names in global reference publishing, with a history dating back to 1819 when William Collins founded a printing press in Glasgow, Scotland. Originally focused on religious texts and schoolbooks, the company evolved into a flagship publisher for bilingual dictionaries, language learning materials, and general reference books.
Over the decades, the brand has undergone significant corporate structural changes. In 1990, William Collins, Sons & Co. merged with the American publisher Harper & Row to form HarperCollins Publishers. Today, the brand is a core part of the HarperCollins portfolio, which is itself a subsidiary of News Corp. While the brand carries a strong British heritage, its publications are printed and distributed globally to meet regional demand, often involving manufacturing sites across Europe, Asia, and North America.
