Sweasy, then-president of the Red Wing Shoe Company, traveled to Europe and observed the growing hiking trend. He returned to the United States and launched the brand—originally named 'Voyageur' before being renamed to Vasque in 1971—to provide American hikers with durable, purpose-built footwear that could handle rugged terrains.

Throughout its history, Vasque has been a pioneer in technical innovation. It was one of the first brands to incorporate GORE-TEX waterproof membranes into hiking boots and has long collaborated with Vibram to provide superior traction outsoles. Iconic models like the Sundowner and the Breeze have become staples for adventurers worldwide, bridging the gap between traditional leather craftsmanship and modern performance materials.

Today, Vasque remains a key subsidiary of the Red Wing Shoe Company, headquartered in Red Wing, Minnesota.
