Founded in 1972 by Matthew Polk, George Klopfer, and Sandy Gross in Baltimore, Maryland, the brand became synonymous with high-quality American audio engineering. Over the decades, Polk Audio transitioned from a small boutique manufacturer to a global audio leader.

Today, while the R&D and design often originate from the United States, manufacturing is primarily centered in China to maintain competitive accessibility. The brand is currently owned by Masimo Corporation, a global medical technology and consumer electronics firm. Masimo acquired Sound United (the previous parent company) in 2022, which brought Polk Audio under its diverse portfolio alongside other prestigious brands like Denon and Marantz.
