The BeagleBone is a low-power open-source single-board computer produced by BeagleBoard.org. Originally conceived as a more compact and cost-effective version of the BeagleBoard, it has become a staple in the maker, education, and industrial embedded systems communities. The hardware design is fully open-source, allowing for a wide community of developers to contribute to its software ecosystem and hardware expansion.
Manufacturing of BeagleBone boards is handled by various partners globally to meet high demand and ensure supply chain resilience. While many of the original boards were manufactured in the United States, production has expanded to other regions including China and Europe through licensed manufacturing partners like Element14 (Premier Farnell) and Seeed Studio. This distributed manufacturing approach supports its widespread use in professional industrial applications where long-term availability is critical.
Ownership of the brand resides with the BeagleBoard.org Foundation, a US-based non-profit corporation. The foundation was established by a group of engineers, including employees from Texas Instruments, to provide a platform for open-source hardware development. Because the board designs use Texas Instruments processors, the two entities maintain a close technical relationship, though the foundation operates as an independent non-profit entity dedicated to education and the promotion of open-source software and hardware.
