Barnängen is one of Sweden's most iconic personal care brands, with a history dating back to 1868 when it was founded by Johan Wilhelm Holmström in Stockholm. Originally famous for its high-quality soaps, the brand became a Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden in 1876. Its products are characterized by Swedish 'Lagom' values—a balance of minimalist care and effective ingredients.

While the brand is Swedish in origin and identity, its corporate ownership has transitioned over the decades to larger international conglomerates. In 2022, the German consumer goods giant Henkel sold Barnängen alongside several other beauty brands to Lab Brands, a subsidiary of the private equity firm CMS Partners. Today, the brand's production is largely integrated into European manufacturing networks, frequently being produced in Slovenia to serve the Nordic market while maintaining its Swedish heritage and product formulations.
