Dyneema is widely recognized as the world's strongest fiber, being up to 15 times stronger than steel on a weight-for-weight basis. Originally discovered accidentally in 1963 by researchers at the Dutch chemical company DSM, it took decades of development to commercialize the gel-spinning process that creates this ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) material.

Today, Dyneema is a critical component in various high-stakes industries, including personal protection (bullet-resistant vests), heavy lifting, maritime operations, and outdoor equipment. Manufacturing is concentrated in specialized facilities in the Netherlands (Heerlen) and the United States (Greenville, NC) to ensure high quality and controlled production standards. In a major industry shift in 2022, ownership of the Dyneema brand and its protective materials business was acquired by Avient Corporation, an American specialty polymers leader.
