TRESemmé was originally developed by Edna L. Emme in 1948 at the Godefroy Manufacturing Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Named as a phonetic play on the French for 'well-loved' (très-aimé) and a nod to its founder, the brand was initially marketed as a professional salon line, allowing women to achieve 'salon-quality' results at home long before it became a household name.
In 1968, the brand was acquired by Alberto-Culver, which expanded its reach significantly across the retail market. Following a massive industry shift in 2010, the consumer goods giant Unilever acquired Alberto-Culver, bringing TRESemmé into its global portfolio of personal care brands. Today, TRESemmé remains a cornerstone of Unilever’s hair care division, positioned as an accessible professional-grade product.
As a global brand, TRESemmé products are manufactured in multiple locations worldwide, including facilities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and various regions in Asia to meet regional demands. The brand has notably achieved PETA approval, certifying that it does not test its products on animals globally.
