Freixenet is an iconic Spanish wine brand with a heritage that dates back to the mid-19th century in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Catalonia. The brand was famously established through the marriage of two prominent winemaking families: the Ferrers and the Salas. They launched the 'Freixenet' brand in 1914, naming it after the Ferrer family's ancestral home, 'La Freixeneda'. The product shown, Cordon Negro, is their most recognizable sparkling wine, famously packaged in its distinctive matte black bottle.
As a true Cava, the product is exclusively manufactured in Spain, specifically within the Penedès region, following the strictly regulated 'Traditional Method' of secondary fermentation in the bottle. This ensures that every bottle retains the authentic characteristics of Spanish sparkling wine production.
In 2018, the German sparkling wine giant Henkell & Co. (now Henkell Freixenet) acquired a majority stake in the company. Henkell Freixenet is the sparkling wine division of the Dr. Oetker Group, a diversified German conglomerate. Today, Freixenet operates as a cornerstone of the world's leading sparkling wine group, benefiting from global distribution networks while maintaining its historic production roots in Spain.
