Velkopopovický Kozel is a historic lager brand with roots dating back to 1874 in the Czech village of Velké Popovice. The brewery was founded by Baron František Ringhoffer, and its iconic goat ('Kozel') mascot has become a symbol of Czech brewing tradition. The 'Dark' variant is particularly well-regarded for its smooth, slightly sweet taste and lower alcohol content compared to typical dark beers.
While the brand maintains its traditional brewing heart in the Czech Republic, its popularity has led to widespread international production. Under its current owner, the brand is brewed in several countries including Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and under license in Russia and elsewhere to meet regional demand. Since 2017, the brand has been part of the Asahi Group Holdings portfolio following the acquisition of AB InBev's Central and Eastern European assets, representing a major Japanese investment in European brewing heritage.
