The brand is not a single product manufacturer but rather a label that certifies sustainable practices across many different African nations including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and Tanzania.

The brand's origin is rooted in Germany, founded by Dr. Michael Otto. It operates on the principle of social entrepreneurship, aiming to improve the living conditions of smallholder farmers and promote environmental protection. The ultimate ownership remains with the Aid by Trade Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Hamburg. This label is used by various global retail partners who source their cotton through the CmiA supply chain to provide social and ecological added value to their garments.
