SPAM is a globally recognized brand of canned cooked pork that has become a cultural icon since its introduction in the late 1930s. Originally created to provide a shelf-stable protein source during the Great Depression, it gained massive international fame as a staple food for Allied troops during World War II. Its name is widely believed to be a portmanteau of 'Spiced Ham,' a name chosen through a naming contest.

The product is manufactured primarily in Austin, Minnesota—famously known as 'Spam Town USA'—at the massive processing facilities of its parent company. Due to its enormous popularity in the Asia-Pacific region, licensed production also takes place in countries like South Korea and the Philippines to meet local demand.

Throughout its history, SPAM has remained under the ownership of its founding company, Hormel Foods. It has evolved from a wartime necessity into a versatile culinary ingredient used in diverse dishes such as Hawaiian Spam Musubi and Korean Budae Jjigae. The brand continues to be a flagship product for Hormel, representing a significant portion of their international grocery heritage.
