Generic Melamine Foam Sponge

This image displays a generic piece of melamine foam, commonly known as an 'eraser sponge'. These foam blocks are made from melamine-formaldehyde-sodium bisulfite copolymer. While the technology was originally developed for insulation and soundproofing, it became widely popular for cleaning after researchers discovered its abrasive properties effectively lift stains from surfaces without the use of chemicals.

Melamine sponges are produced as a raw material by large chemical companies, most notably BASF in Germany, who markets it as Basotect. However, the majority of the finished foam sponges sold globally as unbranded or white-label products—like the one shown—are manufactured in China. They are distributed by countless third-party sellers under various local brand names or as generic bulk household items.
