iDEAL payment system

iDEAL is the most widely used online payment method in the Netherlands, designed to facilitate seamless bank-to-bank transactions. It was launched in 2005 by a collective of major Dutch banks to provide a secure and standardized way to pay online without the need for credit cards.

The system operates through a direct link with the user's online banking application, ensuring high trust and adoption. In late 2023, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when it was acquired by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). This move aims to transform iDEAL from a domestic Dutch solution into a pan-European digital wallet and account-to-account payment standard, marking a new chapter for the brand under international European governance.
