OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research laboratory and technology company. It was founded in San Francisco in 2015 by a group that included Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others, with the goal of developing safe and beneficial artificial intelligence.

Originally established as a non-profit organization, OpenAI transitioned into a 'capped-profit' model in 2019 to better secure capital for high-end computing needs and talent. While it operates independently with its own board, it has a significant multi-year, multi-billion dollar partnership with Microsoft, which provides the Azure cloud infrastructure used to train and run its models. Production and development of its digital products primarily take place in the United States.
