K2 was founded in 1962 by brothers Bill and Don Kirschner on Vashon Island, Washington, United States. Originally known for pioneering fiberglass ski technology, the company expanded into the snowboarding market in the late 1980s, becoming one of the most iconic names in winter sports history.
While early production was centered in the United States, modern K2 products are primarily manufactured in specialized facilities in China to maintain global competitiveness. The brand remains renowned for its research and development, often testing its innovations in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest to ensure high performance for athletes and enthusiasts alike.
Over the decades, K2 has transitioned through several major corporate owners. Following its acquisition by Jarden Corporation in 2007, and Jarden's subsequent merger with Newell Brands in 2016, K2 was eventually sold as part of the specialized winter sports portfolio. As of the current trajectory into 2026, K2 Sports is under the ownership of Kohlberg & Company through their platform company, K2-MDV Holdings, which also manages other premier alpine brands such as Völkl and Marker.
