Amstel is a globally recognized beer brand with deep historical roots in the Netherlands. Founded in 1870 by friends Charles de Pesters and Johannes van Marwijk Kooy in Amsterdam, the brewery took its name from the Amstel River. The brand became famous for its pilsner and eventually expanded its reach through the Dutch railway network and international exports.

In 1968, Amstel was acquired by Heineken International, leading to the eventual closure of the original Amsterdam brewery in the early 1980s as production shifted to Heineken's modern facilities. In the Spanish market, Amstel has a particularly strong presence; Heineken España replaced the local brand 'El Águila' with Amstel in many regions starting in the 1990s. Today, much of the Amstel consumed in Spain is produced locally at Heineken's breweries in locations such as Quart de Poblet (Valencia), Seville, and Madrid, though the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of the Dutch multinational Heineken N.V.
