OpenMediaVault (OMV) is a specialized open-source Linux distribution designed for network-attached storage (NAS). It was created by Volker Theile in 2009 after he decided to port the features of FreeNAS to a Debian Linux base. The software is designed to be a modular and easy-to-use solution for home users and small offices, offering services like SSH, FTP, SMB/CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, and BitTorrent clients.
Unlike proprietary hardware-software bundles, OMV is a community-driven project. It does not have a single manufacturing location as its code is contributed to and maintained by developers globally. The project is primarily hosted and coordinated from Germany, where its lead developer is based. It is widely recognized for its extensive plugin system and its ability to run on various architectures including x86 and ARM-based single-board computers.
