Brand History and Evolution

Kahoot! was founded in 2012 by Johan Brand, Jamie Brooker, and Morten Versvik in a joint project with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). It officially launched in private beta in March 2013 at SXSWedu, followed by a public launch in September 2013. The platform quickly became a global phenomenon, revolutionizing classrooms and corporate training by turning assessments into competitive, high-energy games.

Manufacturing and Operational Presence

As a digital software-as-a-service (SaaS) product, Kahoot! does not have a traditional manufacturing location. However, its core software development, engineering, and headquarters are primarily based in Oslo, Norway. To serve its massive international user base, the company maintains a physical presence through offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Spain, ensuring localized support and development for its global community.

Ownership and Global Expansion

While it originated as a Norwegian startup, Kahoot! has grown through significant acquisitions, including the educational app DragonBox and the reading platform Poio. In early 2024, the company underwent a major transition in ownership. It was taken private by a consortium led by the global investment firm Goldman Sachs Asset Management, alongside investors such as LEGO Group’s KIRKBI and Glitrafjord. This move was designed to fuel further innovation and market expansion beyond the public stock exchange.
