The Berger Blanc Suisse, often mistakenly called a 'Malinois bianco' by those unfamiliar with specific shepherd classifications, is a distinct breed with a fascinating history. While it shares ancestry with the White German Shepherd, the breed as it is known today was officially developed and recognized in Switzerland. The breed's lineage can be traced back to the United States and Canada, where white-coated German Shepherds were preserved after they were disqualified from the breed standard in Europe.

In the early 1970s, the first of these dogs were imported to Switzerland. The Swiss breed club was formed, and the dog 'Lobo', born in the USA, is considered the progenitor of the breed in Switzerland. In 2011, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) officially recognized it as a unique breed under the name Berger Blanc Suisse (White Swiss Shepherd). Unlike the Belgian Malinois, which is valued for high-intensity work and often has a fawn and black coat, the White Swiss Shepherd is characterized by its solid white double coat and a temperament generally described as more gentle and companion-oriented.
