Osram is one of the most iconic names in the history of lighting, with a legacy stretching back to the early 20th century. Originally founded in Germany in 1919 through the merger of the lighting businesses of Siemens & Halske, AEG, and Auergesellschaft, the brand quickly became a global powerhouse in the illumination industry. For decades, it was a core subsidiary of Siemens AG, known for its high-quality incandescent, halogen, and eventually LED and xenon lighting solutions.
In 2013, Osram was spun off from Siemens, marking a significant shift in its corporate structure. The 2010s saw the company pivot heavily toward high-tech applications, including automotive lighting, optic semiconductors, and digital smart lighting systems. This evolution culminated in a series of strategic acquisitions and divestments, most notably the 2020 takeover by ams AG, a leading Austrian sensor and semiconductor manufacturer. This merger formed ams OSRAM, a company focused on optical solutions.
Today, the manufacturing of Osram products is a global operation. While the company maintains significant research and production facilities in Germany and Austria, its manufacturing footprint extends heavily into Asia, specifically Malaysia and China, as well as production sites in the United States and Mexico. This distribution allows ams OSRAM to serve both the consumer decorative lighting market and the highly demanding automotive and industrial sectors.
