The Object 279 was an experimental Soviet heavy tank developed in late 1957. It was uniquely designed to survive the shockwave of a nuclear explosion and operate in cross-country terrain that would be impassable for conventional tanks. Its most striking feature is the four-track running gear and its UFO-like elliptical hull, which was intended to prevent the tank from being overturned by a nearby nuclear blast. Only a few prototypes were built at the Kirov Plant in Leningrad before the project was discontinued by Nikita Khrushchev, who preferred lighter, missile-armed vehicles.
The brand legacy of Soviet military hardware like the Object 279 is managed by the Russian Federation as the successor state. The physical remaining prototype is currently housed at the Kubinka Tank Museum in Russia. While the 'brand' is state-owned history, representations of the vehicle frequently appear in modern media and gaming assets, where its futuristic Cold War aesthetic remains a point of fascination.
