The brand 'Continente' was established in Portugal in 1985 with the opening of the country's first hypermarket.

The brand is owned by Sonae, one of Portugal's largest multinational conglomerates. While manufacturing of private label products often involves third-party partnerships, Continente's ketchup is primarily produced in Portugal to ensure supply chain efficiency and support local industry. The ultimate ownership lies with Sonae SGPS, headquartered in Maia, Portugal, which continues to manage the brand as part of its extensive retail portfolio through its subsidiary, MC (formerly Sonae MC).
