Horlicks is a globally recognized brand steeped in history, originally formulated by British brothers William and James Horlick in the United States during the 1870s. Despite its early American factory, the brand became a staple of British culture and health supplementation, famously used on polar expeditions and by soldiers in both World Wars.
Over the decades, the brand's ownership has shifted through several major pharmaceutical and consumer goods giants. For a long period, it was a cornerstone of GSK (GlaxoSmithKline). In a significant reorganization of global consumer health assets in 2020, the brand's primary rights were acquired by Unilever.
Today, Unilever manages Horlicks as part of its nutrition portfolio. In the UK and Ireland specifically, the brand's operations were divested to the Aimia Foods group, based in the UK. However, the global brand intellectual property and its massive market presence in regions like South Asia are managed by Unilever, ensuring it remains one of the world's leading malted milk products.
