Toblerone is one of the world's most recognizable chocolate brands, famous for its unique triangular shape that mimics the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. The brand was created in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann in Bern, Switzerland. The name is a portmanteau of the founder's surname, Tobler, and 'Torrone,' the Italian word for honey and almond nougat, which is a key ingredient in the signature recipe alongside Swiss milk chocolate.
For over a century, the product was exclusively manufactured in Bern. However, following the acquisition of the brand by international giants and the eventual ownership by Mondelez International, production was partially expanded. In 2023, Mondelez shifted some production to a facility in Bratislava, Slovakia. This move was notable as it triggered the 'Swissness' laws, requiring the brand to remove the 'of Switzerland' claim and the Matterhorn silhouette from its packaging for bars produced outside the country.
Today, Toblerone is a flagship brand under Mondelez International, a global snacking powerhouse. Despite the geographical diversification of its manufacturing, the brand remains deeply tied to its Swiss heritage through its unique ingredients and the legacy of its original Bernese confectionery roots.
