The Stridsvagn 103, also known as the S-Tank, is a unique Swedish main battle tank designed during the 1950s and produced from the 1960s through the early 1970s. It is most famous for its turretless design, where the gun is fixed to the hull and aimed by adjusting the vehicle's suspension and tracks. This unconventional approach allowed for a very low profile and enhanced crew protection.
Developed by Bofors for the Swedish Army, the S-Tank was a result of Sweden's neutral defense policy, requiring a vehicle optimized for defensive maneuvers in the domestic landscape of forests and rolling hills. While it was never exported or used in combat, it remains one of the most innovative armored vehicle designs of the Cold War era. Production was handled primarily by Bofors (now part of BAE Systems) along with other Swedish industrial contributors.
