The T-62 is a Soviet tank that was first put into service in the early 1960s. It was developed by the Kartsev-Venediktov design bureau at Uralvagonzavod and was the first mass-produced tank armed with a smoothbore gun, specifically the 115 mm U-5TS. This innovation allowed for higher muzzle velocities and improved armor penetration.
Historically, the T-62 formed the backbone of the Soviet armored forces, replacing the T-55 in many frontline units. Although its development and original production took place in the Soviet Union (now Russia), the tank was also license-produced in Czechoslovakia for export markets, as well as independently in North Korea. Today, the design is legally owned by the Russian Federation as the successor state to the USSR, with Uralvagonzavod continuing to be the primary entity responsible for modernization and maintenance.
