Rothaus Tannenzäpfle is a cult-status German Pilsner produced by the Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus, located high in the Black Forest (Schwarzwald). The brewery was founded in 1791 by the Benedictine Monastery of St. Blasien. The name Tannenzäpfle, which means 'little pine cone,' was introduced in 1956 and has since become the brewery's most famous label, recognizable by its distinctive artwork featuring 'Biergit,' the Black Forest girl holding two beer mugs.
What makes Rothaus unique is its ownership structure; since the secularization in 1806, it has been owned by the state, eventually becoming property of the State of Baden-Württemberg. To this day, it remains a state-owned enterprise (Staatsbrauerei). The beer is brewed using local spring water and hops, exclusively at the original site in Grafenhausen, Germany, ensuring a consistent and traditional quality that has gained popularity worldwide.
