Wimdu was founded in 2011 in Berlin, Germany, as a competitor to existing vacation rental platforms. It was originally launched with significant backing from Rocket Internet, a well-known German technology incubator known for replicating successful American business models in international markets. The platform quickly expanded across Europe and the globe, positioning itself as a leader in the private accommodation sector.
Over the years, the company underwent several ownership changes. In late 2016, it was acquired by the Novasol Group (then a part of Wyndham Worldwide). However, in 2018, Novasol was acquired by Platinum Equity, which eventually led to the restructuring of its brands. Today, Wimdu operates under the umbrella of the HomeToGo Group, which acquired the brand to strengthen its position in the meta-search and booking market for holiday rentals. The brand remains a digital-first service managed via European technology hubs.
