Viber, now known as Rakuten Viber, is a cross-platform voice over IP (VoIP) and instant messaging software application. It was originally founded in 2010 by Israeli entrepreneurs Talmon Marco and Igor Magazinnik. The platform quickly grew into one of the world's most popular messaging apps, known for its end-to-end encryption and high-quality voice calling features.

In 2014, the brand underwent a significant transition when it was acquired by the Japanese e-commerce and tech giant Rakuten Group, Inc. for $900 million. Since the acquisition, Viber has been integrated into the broader Rakuten ecosystem, often being rebranded as Rakuten Viber to reflect its corporate parentage.

While its origins are firmly rooted in Tel Aviv, Israel, the company's operations and development teams are now distributed internationally, with major offices in Luxembourg, the United States, and various parts of Europe. As of 2024 and beyond, it remains a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rakuten, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, continuing to facilitate billions of messages and calls worldwide.
