Tempo is one of Germany's most iconic brands, so synonymous with paper tissues that the name is often used as a generic term for the product itself. The brand was originally created in 1929 by the Vereinigte Papierwerke AG in Nuremberg, Germany. It revolutionized the market by providing a disposable alternative to cloth handkerchiefs, designed for the fast-paced modern life of the era.
Today, the brand is owned by Essity, a Swedish global hygiene and health company. While Tempo has deep German roots and maintains major production facilities in Germany (such as in Neuss), manufacturing also takes place across various European sites to supply international markets. Ownership has transitioned through several major corporations, including Procter & Gamble, before being acquired by Essity (formerly part of SCA) in 2007.
