Nokia's brand story is a unique tale of evolution, originating in 1865 in Finland as a pulp mill before transforming into a global leader in mobile communications. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Nokia became the world's most dominant mobile phone manufacturer. Today, the brand's identity is split between two distinct corporate entities: Nokia Corporation, which focuses on network infrastructure, and HMD Global, which manufactures mobile devices under the Nokia name.

Manufacturing for Nokia products is highly globalized. Nokia Corporation’s network hardware is produced across various facilities in Europe, China, and India. Conversely, Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets are designed and marketed by HMD Global, with the majority of production outsourced to FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Foxconn, with heavy manufacturing concentrations in China and Vietnam.

Ownership of the brand remains rooted in Finland. Nokia Corporation remains an independent public company listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki and New York Stock Exchanges. In 2016, a strategic licensing agreement was formed with HMD Global Oy—a Finnish startup founded by former Nokia executives—to return the legendary brand to the smartphone market. This partnership ensures that while the manufacturing and marketing are handled by partners, the brand's Finnish heritage and design standards remain central to its global identity.
