The AgustaWestland AW129 Mangusta is a premier attack helicopter designed and produced in Italy. Originally developed by Agusta to meet the requirements of the Italian Army, it holds the distinction of being the first attack helicopter to be designed and produced wholly in Western Europe. Its development stands as a testament to Italian aerospace engineering, featuring a tandem cockpit and sophisticated anti-tank capabilities.

Over the decades, the brand underwent significant corporate transformations. In 2000, Agusta merged with the British firm GKN’s Westland Helicopters to form AgustaWestland. This partnership solidified the helicopter's presence in international markets. However, the ownership evolved further as the Italian industrial giant Finmeccanica eventually acquired full control of the venture.

In 2016, a major restructuring saw the 'AgustaWestland' brand integrated into the Helicopter Division of its parent company, which was renamed Leonardo S.p.A. Today, Leonardo continues to manage and manufacture successors like the T129 (in partnership with Turkey) and the upcoming AW249, maintaining the legacy of the Mangusta within a massive Italian-headquartered global aerospace and defense conglomerate.
