Freixenet is one of the most recognizable names in the world of sparkling wine, famous for its iconic black matte bottle known as Cordon Negro. The brand's history dates back to 1861 when Francesc Sala Ferrés founded Casa Sala, but it was the marriage between Pedro Ferrer Bosch and Dolores Sala Vivé in the early 20th century that laid the foundation for the Freixenet label as we know it today. The brand is deeply rooted in the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain.
Today, Freixenet is a global powerhouse in the wine industry. In 2018, the German sparkling wine giant Henkell & Co. (owned by the Oetker Group) acquired a majority stake in the company, forming Henkell Freixenet. This merger created one of the world's leading sparkling wine groups. Despite the change in ownership, the production remains localized in Spain to adhere to the strict regulations governing the 'Cava' designation of origin.
