Marabou is a quintessential Swedish chocolate brand that has been a household name in Scandinavia for over a century. Founded in 1916 by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, the brand was established in Sundbyberg, Sweden, as a sister company to the Norwegian Freia brand. The distinctive name 'Marabou' was chosen because the Freia name was already trademarked in Sweden, leading the founder to name the new venture after the marabou stork, which was the symbol on the Freia logo.
Today, Marabou is renowned for its smooth milk chocolate and iconic yellow packaging. While the brand remains deeply rooted in Swedish culture and maintains a major production facility in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, it has been part of a global portfolio for decades. After being acquired by Kraft Foods in 1993, the brand eventually transitioned to Mondelēz International following the corporate spin-off in 2012. Modern manufacturing is primarily centered in Sweden, though some production support for the wider European market is provided by facilities in Lithuania.
