Marie Callender's began as a small home-based bakery in Long Beach, California, in 1948. Marie Callender, along with her husband Cal and son Don, started by selling pies to local restaurants. This humble beginning eventually evolved into a successful chain of pie shops and casual dining restaurants that became famous for their 'home-cooked' flavors and high-quality ingredients.
Today, the brand exists in two separate forms: the restaurant chain and the frozen food line found in grocery stores. The frozen food brand, which includes popular items like chicken pot pies and dessert pies, was developed to bring the restaurant's signature flavors to a wider audience. The manufacturing for these retail products is primarily handled through large-scale facilities in the United States, utilizing modern freezing technology to preserve the quality and taste that the brand was founded upon.
The ownership of the brand is currently split. The retail frozen food business is owned and managed by Conagra Brands, a major American packaged foods company. Meanwhile, the Marie Callender’s restaurant chain is operated by Marie Callender Pie Shops, LLC. This dual-track existence allows the brand to maintain its presence in both the hospitality sector and the highly competitive frozen aisle of supermarkets across North America.
