Polaroid is one of the most iconic names in photography, fundamentally defined by the invention of instant film. Founded in 1937 by Edwin Land, the company revolutionized the market with the introduction of the first commercial instant camera in 1948. For decades, Polaroid dominated the field of analog instant imaging from its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Following the rise of digital photography, the original corporation faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy in the early 2000s. The brand underwent several ownership changes until the production of its film was rescued by 'The Impossible Project' in 2008. In 2017, the brand was unified when the Impossible Project's parent company acquired the Polaroid brand name and intellectual property. Today, the brand is owned by Polaroid B.V., a Dutch-based company that continues to manufacture cameras and film for a global audience.
