Smarties were originally launched in the United Kingdom in 1937 under the H.I. Rowntree & Company brand. These colorful, sugar-coated chocolate lentils have since become a global staple in the confectionery market. While they originated in York, England, production has expanded over the decades to various international facilities. Notably, the brand underwent a significant transformation in 2006 when chocolate giant Nestlé removed all artificial colors and flavors from the product to meet growing consumer demand for natural ingredients.

Today, Smarties are manufactured in several locations worldwide to serve different regions. The primary production hub for the European market is located in Hamburg, Germany, while the Canadian market is served by a facility in Toronto. In the United States, the name 'Smarties' refers to a completely different tablet-style candy owned by Smarties Candy Company, so the chocolate version is generally not sold there under that name. Nestlé’s long-term ownership has ensured that Smarties remains one of the most recognizable global chocolate brands, supported by extensive distribution networks and localized marketing strategies.
