Tempo is the quintessential German tissue brand, founded in 1929 by the Vereinigte Papierwerke AG in Nuremberg. It became so successful that the word 'Tempo' is often used as a generic term for paper tissues in Germany. The brand revolutionized personal hygiene by introducing the first disposable paper handkerchief, which was a significant shift from the traditional cloth versions used at the time.
Over the decades, ownership of the brand has changed hands several times as the global paper industry consolidated. After being owned by Procter & Gamble for many years, the brand was acquired by the Swedish hygiene and health company SCA (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget) in 2007. In 2017, SCA spun off its hygiene unit into a new global company called Essity. Today, Tempo remains a flagship brand for Essity, with continued production across Europe, maintaining its status as a market leader in the tissue category.
