Granko is a legendary brand of soluble cocoa mix that has been a household staple in Central Europe since its inception. The brand was first introduced in 1979 in the former Czechoslovakia, specifically developed by the state-owned enterprise Čokoládovny. Its name was chosen through a public competition and is a portmanteau of the words 'Granulované' (granulated) and 'Koko' (cocoa), reflecting its unique, easy-to-dissolve texture.
Following the privatization era and the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the brand's production facilities were acquired by the Swiss multinational food giant Nestlé. This transition allowed Granko to modernize its production while maintaining its iconic status as the leading cocoa brand in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Today, Granko is primarily manufactured in the Czech Republic at the Sfinx plant in Holešov. While it remains under the global umbrella of Nestlé, it continues to focus on its heritage as a regional favorite, often expanding its line to include alternative flavors and syrup variants while keeping its classic granulated cocoa drink as the flagship product.
