Quorn is a pioneering brand in the meat-alternative industry, famous for its use of mycoprotein, a nutritious fungus-based protein. The brand was born from a joint venture between Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) and Lord Rank's company, RHM (Rank Hovis McDougall), in the 1960s with the goal of creating a sustainable food source to address global protein shortages. The first commercial Quorn products were introduced to the UK market in 1985.
Today, the majority of Quorn's production continues to take place in the United Kingdom, specifically at its facility in Belasis Park, Billingham. This site is home to some of the world's largest fermenters used for growing mycoprotein. The brand's emphasis on sustainability and low environmental impact remains a core part of its mission, citing significantly lower carbon and water footprints compared to traditional beef production.
Since 2015, Quorn has been owned by Monde Nissin Corporation, a major food and beverage company headquartered in the Philippines. While ownership shifted to an international conglomerate, Quorn Foods operates as a subsidiary, maintaining its primary research, development, and manufacturing hub in North Yorkshire, England, while expanding its reach across Europe, Australia, and the United States.
