GAIL (India) Limited, formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited, is the largest state-owned natural gas processing and distribution company in India. Founded in 1984, the company was initially established by the Government of India under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to manage the construction and operation of the HVJ gas pipeline. Over the decades, it has evolved into a massive energy conglomerate with a dominant presence in natural gas transmission, marketing, and liquid hydrocarbons.

Beyond domestic operations, GAIL has expanded its footprint globally through subsidiaries and joint ventures. It maintains a significant presence in the petrochemical industry, operating large-scale plants that convert natural gas into polymers. The company is also active in renewable energy sectors including solar and wind power, reflecting a shift toward sustainable energy solutions. As a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking, it remains a cornerstone of India's national energy security and gas grid infrastructure.
