Pepto-Bismol is one of the most recognizable gastrointestinal relief brands in the world, famous for its distinct pink color. The product was originally developed in the early 20th century, around 1901, by a doctor in New York named William Wallace Bliss. It was originally sold under the name 'Bismosal' as a remedy for 'cholera infantum,' a severe form of diarrhea that affected infants at the time.
The brand was eventually acquired by the Norwich Pharmacal Company, which renamed it Pepto-Bismol in 1919. In 1982, the consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) acquired the Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals company, bringing Pepto-Bismol into its extensive portfolio of health and personal care products. Manufacturing today remains centered in the United States, primarily through P&G's facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, though the brand is distributed internationally through various local subsidiaries.
