Hydrox is a brand of chocolate sandwich cookies that holds a unique place in American snack history. Originally introduced in 1908 by the Sunshine Biscuits company, it predates its primary competitor, Oreo, by four years. Despite being the original chocolate sandwich cookie, it eventually became less popular than its rival.
The cookies were known for a crunchier texture and a less sweet, tangier filling compared to other sandwich cookies. Manufacturing primarily takes place in the United States, keeping in line with the brand's long-standing American heritage. Over the decades, the brand passed through various corporate hands during different mergers and acquisitions within the food industry.
In 2015, Leaf Brands, a company dedicated to reviving classic American candy and snack brands, officially relaunched Hydrox. The brand is now marketed as a premium, non-GMO alternative in the sandwich cookie category, focusing on its original recipe that avoids high-fructose corn syrup and artificial ingredients. Today, the brand remains under the stewardship of Leaf Brands, LLC, headquartered in Newport Beach, California.
