Founded in 1853 by Godfrey Keebler in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Keebler brand has grown from a local bakery into one of the most iconic snack brands in the United States. For over 150 years, the brand has been synonymous with its mascot, Ernie the Elf, and the whimsical 'Hollow Tree' bakery. Throughout the 20th century, Keebler expanded through various mergers and acquisitions, notably becoming a major supplier of Girl Scout Cookies through its Little Brownie Bakers division.
In 2001, the Kellogg Company acquired Keebler in a multi-billion dollar deal, integrating it into one of the world's largest food portfolios. However, in 2019, as part of a strategic shift, Kellogg sold the Keebler cookie business (along with other assets like Famous Amos and Mother’s) to the Ferrero Group. While Kellogg retained the rights to many cracker lines previously under the Keebler name, the cookie brand itself is now part of the global Ferrero confectionery empire, famously known for Nutella and Ferrero Rocher.
Today, Keebler cookies remain a staple of the American snack aisle. While the brand is managed under the Ferrero umbrella, its production remains largely concentrated in the United States to serve North American retail markets.
