Max Havelaar is a brand name and fair trade label with a profound historical and ideological origin. Named after the protagonist of the 1860 novel by Multatuli (Eduard Douwes Dekker), which exposed the colonial abuses of the Dutch coffee trade in the East Indies, the brand was established to promote ethical sourcing. The first Max Havelaar fair trade coffee was launched in the Netherlands in 1988 by the Stichting Max Havelaar, founded by Nico Roozen and Frans van der Hoff alongside the solidarity organization Solidaridad.
Today, the brand serves as a primary label for Fairtrade products globally. While the coffee beans are sourced from multiple developing nations across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, the brand itself is managed by various national Fairtrade organizations under the umbrella of Fairtrade International. It represents a mission-driven commercial model rather than a traditional corporate brand, ensuring that small-scale farmers receive fair compensation and operate under sustainable conditions.
