Morrisons is one of the United Kingdom's 'Big Four' supermarket chains, distinguished by its significant vertical integration through its 'Market Street' concept. Originally founded as an egg and butter stall in Bradford, England, in 1899 by William Morrison, the brand has grown into a national retail powerhouse. Unlike many of its competitors, Morrisons owns a large portion of its supply chain, including many of the farms and processing plants that produce its own-label fresh food, which is primarily manufactured within the UK.
In 2021, the company underwent a major transition in ownership when it was acquired by the American private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R). This move ended Morrisons' nearly 55-year history as a publicly listed company on the London Stock Exchange. Today, the brand continues to operate under its original name, maintaining its headquarters in Bradford while being managed through various holding companies under the CD&R umbrella. The brand remains deeply rooted in British retail culture while operating under private international ownership.
