Goon is a colloquial Australian term for inexpensive cask wine, also known as 'bag-in-box' wine. The product was famously invented in South Australia in 1965 by Thomas Angove of Angove's Wines, who sought a more efficient way to package and transport wine. The original design used a polyethylene bladder inside a cardboard box, which eventually evolved to include the modern air-free tap mechanism.
While 'Goon' is a generic term used across many brands, the most iconic and original associated brand is Angove. Today, cask wine is produced by numerous major Australian beverage companies, including Accolade Wines and Treasury Wine Estates. Because it is a product type rather than a single trademarked brand, it is manufactured extensively across Australia's wine regions, particularly in South Australia and Victoria, and is exported globally. The environmental impact and convenience of the lightweight packaging remain key drivers for its continued popularity in the 2020s and beyond.
